What is Open Enrollment?
Open enrollment, also known as School Choice, is Wisconsin's public school program which allows parents to apply for their children to attend school in a school district other than the one in which they live. If parents already have a child attending a school district through open enrollment, they must apply for each additional child in their family as they become eligible.
Why the Beaver Dam Unified School District?
Our school communities have earned 27 Wisconsin School of Recognition Awards, 4 top ranking recognitions by US News and World Reports, and 3 National Blue Ribbon Awards for Excellence. The BDFam is committed to excellent staff to student ratios, low class sizes and commitment to student services resources that is second to none. Our elementary schools consistently rank at the top in our region and are recognized at the state and national level. Our high school offers the most comprehensive set of offerings in the region, and allows students to choose pathways that can afford them the opportunity to earn multiple college credits and/or participate in extensive career pathways that include multiple youth apprenticeship opportunities. In addition, we offer more access and variety in the area of extracurricular activities, clubs, the performing arts, and athletics than any other district in the region. In the BDFam, every child has an opportunity to be involved and connected in something that reflects their interest, talent and passion!
Who May Participate?
Students in 5-Year Old Kindergarten through Grade 12 and who are Wisconsin residents.
Students in 4-year old kindergarten and Early Childhood may participate provided their resident district has a similar program and the child qualifies to participate in that program.
How and When May Parents Apply?
The recommended method of applying for open enrollment is through the on-line application process on the Department of Public Instruction's website https://dpi.wi.gov/oe during the open enrollment application period (February - April). Parents may complete a paper application and submit it to the district they wish for their child to attend (non-resident school district) during the application period. The application period for the 2024-2025 school year opens on February 5, 2024.
